Retirement goal: Freedom from the mental burden of work
Elaine had done everything right. She'd paid off her mortgage, checked her super and worked out a budget. But despite the numbers telling her she could retire, she couldn't shake the fear that her money might run out.
The thought of giving up a regular pay cheque felt so daunting that she almost delayed retirement by another two years. That hesitation surprised her. After all, she had been looking forward to the freedom that came with stepping away from the constant responsibilities of work.
After retiring, Elaine tracked every dollar she spent. Gradually, she realised her savings were lasting longer than expected and the financial disasters she'd worried about weren't happening.
She also discovered that retirement didn't need to be filled with bucket-list adventures. Instead, she found contentment in a quieter life built around routine, freedom and doing things at her own pace.
"I tracked my spending for twelve months before I retired. I worked on a budget, and knew that I could live within my means. I think that helped make things easier than anticipated at first."
Key takeaway: Retirement confidence often comes from experience. Sometimes the biggest barrier isn't your finances, it's trusting the plan you've already put in place.

Michael, mid-60s - the gradual transitioner

Retirement goal: Spend quality time with family while still healthy
Michael always looked forward to retirement. His father had died before he'd had a chance to enjoy his retirement savings, so after leaving full-time work, Michael prioritised travelling with his wife, catching up with family and enjoying the freedom he'd worked hard for.
But once the novelty wore off, something unexpected happened. The days began to feel shapeless. For the first time in decades, he didn't have a reason to get up in the morning.
Rather than forcing himself into full retirement, Michael found a different path. He returned to work part-time on his own terms. The role gave him structure, social connection and a renewed sense of purpose, while still leaving plenty of time for travel and the things he enjoys.
"When you retire, you're kind of floating around doing nothing. Going back to work a little bit gave me purpose."
Key takeaway: Retirement doesn't have to be all or nothing. Gradual transitions give you time to discover what retirement actually feels like.
