Two people sit at a wooden outdoor table, clinking glasses of white wine together at a winery, with a rustic building in the background.

Starting out as an Uber driver in Sydney, Travis McDonnell never imagined he’d build one of the city’s most popular shuttle services. Starting Trav’s Tours in 2021, Travis transformed a simple side hustle into a thriving business specialising in airport transfers, wine tours and special events. In this Q&A, Travis opens up about how he got started, the challenges and rewards of running a mini business, and the valuable lessons he’s learnt along the way about community, resilience and customer service.

How did Trav’s Tours get started?

Trav’s Tours was born during a visit to my friend’s house in Orange, which is a wine region in NSW. I envisioned a service that offered exceptional experiences while transporting people around a wine region like this.

Initially, I worked as a flight attendant for a budget airline, and an Uber driver in my spare time. I relied on word-of-mouth referrals from passengers I met while on flights. Instead of the usual landing announcements, I encouraged passengers to download the Uber app.

As Uber grew into a bigger company, I decided to start my own thing, and revive a more personal, relaxed and friendly shuttle transportation service.

What does your mini business do?

Trav’s Tours specialises in transfers throughout the Sydney Metro area, including trips to and from the airport, cruises, concerts, nights out, as well as wine tours further from the city.

What’s something your mini business has taught you about yourself?

Running a small business is incredibly rewarding. You get to be your own boss but it also means taking on responsibility and accountability. The joy of meeting amazing people and taking them to various destinations is truly fulfilling.

What’s your favourite part of your day as a mini-business owner?

My favourite part of the day is when customers are relaxed and enjoying their journey to their final destination.

What’s more valuable as a mini-business owner, social presence or word of mouth?

I launched my business by promoting it on my local community page after moving to the area. The community welcomed me wholeheartedly, supporting me through word of mouth and positive reviews. My family and friends have also played a crucial role in my success.

Tell us about your first customer.

My first customers were my family who visited for Christmas. We had a great time touring around Sydney together – it was a blast!

What’s something you never thought you’d be doing but now is part of your business?

I never imagined hearing ads for my business on the radio – it was a surreal experience.

What’s been your biggest ‘OMG I’m actually doing it!’ moment?

The most exhilarating moment came when I received a flood of bookings for the Taylor Swift concert in Sydney. I had to bring in multiple drivers and vehicles to accommodate the demand!

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about running a mini business?

Running a small business has its ups and downs. The challenges include early morning airport runs and managing invoices and taxes, while the rewards include the extra income that allows for memorable holidays.

What’s a ‘failure’ that actually moved your business forward?

One mistake to avoid is overextending your advertising efforts in places that don’t resonate. Focus on your local community as they will be your strongest supporters.

If you have an idea, go for it! Don’t just think about it – take the plunge and make it happen.
