How does TPD insurance work?

    • Injury or sickness permanently prevents you from working

TPD insurance can provide a lump sum payment if you become permanently disabled or too sick to ever work again.

    • Approved claims receive a lump sum

The payment can be used to help with rehabilitation costs, debts and future living expenses.

    • Lump sum is paid in addition to super

If you're eligible and a claim is approved, the benefit can be paid in addition to your super account balance.

Who may be eligible for TPD insurance in super?

    Eligibility

    • TPD cover is generally available to AMP Super members, although eligibility varies depending on your plan. Check your insurance guide.
    • Cover for TPD is generally only available together with death cover.
    • To receive a benefit, you must meet the policy definition of Total and Permanent Disablement. Different TPD definitions may apply depending on your employment status and policy terms.
    • You may not be eligible for a benefit if your disablement is caused by certain exclusions set out in your policy. Check your insurance guide.

    Qualifying period

    • A qualifying period generally applies before a TPD benefit can be paid. Check your insurance guide.
    • During this period, you may be required to seek and follow appropriate medical treatment.
    • In some circumstances, the qualifying period may be waived depending on your policy and the nature of your illness or injury.

How to make a TPD claim

Claims are assessed based on your policy terms. For full details, check your insurance guide.

Example of working out a TPD payment

Mark’s 49 years old and worked in a book shop for eight hours a week, until he hit his head in a car accident and now suffers recurring head and neck pain.

Although he can still live independently and do everyday activities such as feeding and dressing himself, he has trouble concentrating. Mark has been doing rehabilitation but will never be able to perform key parts of his job (or another job) again, such as re-stocking shelves, and standing for long periods. He also must make some changes to his home to allow for his injury.

Mark’s claim is successful because the insurer determines that he’s unlikely to be able to work again and a lump sum benefit is paid into his super account.

This example is illustrative only and is not intended to reflect or advise on the prospects of success of any similar claim. Careful consideration should be given to relevant personal circumstances and applicable factual circumstances when considering the prospects of success of a claim.
