We recently ran a Facebook competition asking our followers to tell us in 25 words some of their Valentine's Day ideas that are big on love but have little impact on the budget. Here are some of our favourites.
1. Indulge their sweet tooth and sense of fun
Create a goody bag with all your Valentine’s favourite treats or get cooking and whip up some of their favourite foods.
2. Plan an adventure – just for two
Spend the day exploring a town or city you’ve never been to before. Work out which parks, museums and attractions you want to visit (for free) and create more memories together.
3. Start a date jar
Write down all the ways you can spoil your partner – from lavish long lunches to affordable afternoon teas or a massage coupon, a day trip or a mixed CD of their favourite music. Put these in a jar and let them pick one every so often.
4. Make a difference
Donate or buy an item for the homeless. Find out from your local charity what they really need and make this your true act of selfless love on this special day.
5. Old-fashioned love
Pack a picnic basket and go to a park near your favourite beach to eat, swim and watch the sun go down (or the moon come up!).
6. Romantic notes
Write a hand written letter, or romantic message book, about the things you love about your Valentine. Share the things you treasure about them and how you’re looking forward to your future together – it's a refreshing change from today's text messages and emojis.
7. Make it a family affair
Involve the kids and make love-heart pasta for dinner or create handmade love notes that you put on the fridge for the whole family to share.
8. Outsource the kids to Grandma
Or you could ditch the kids and make it a dinner strictly for two! Cook your Valentine’s favourite dish and serve it with a bottle of good wine and candles before you settle down to watch a romantic movie.
9. Show everyone how much you care
Declare your love in a short but sweet ad in the classifieds of the local newspaper - some newspapers offer the first three lines for free!
10. Share the memories
Take a drive down memory lane by taking you partner to those spots where you created those special memories together. Capture the moment with photos you can share with family and friends and cherish for the rest of your life.
Thanks to all our readers for your fantastic contributions to our Valentine's Day competition. And a big congratulations to our winners Eva Kiraly, Fiona Selimi and Cat May. Be sure to like our Facebook page to stay tuned to enter more competitions over the coming year.
