If you’re one of the estimated five million Australians who can now choose where their super savings go, you can make a difference to your super by choosing which fund to invest in and what features you need to ensure you have the retirement you’ve been dreaming of.
Government legislation may give you the choice of where to invest your Superannuation Guarantee contributions. It means that you may be able to choose to have your contributions paid into a different complying super fund.
You may be eligible to choose your own super fund if you:
- are covered by a Federal or Territory award, including Victoria Common Rule awards
- are employed by an employer who is an incorporated business and you are covered by a State award (now known as a ‘notional agreement preserving State award’ under WorkChoices legislation)
- are one of a specific group of Commonwealth employees
- are not covered by an award.
You should talk to your employer or the person in charge of your super to find out if you’re eligible.
Questions to ask
If you’re considering changing your super fund or choosing one for the first time, the key questions to ask yourself are:
- How much am I currently saving for retirement?
- Is what I'm saving enough to fund the lifestyle I want when I retire?
- Am I on track to save as much as I need?
- How do I feel about my current superannuation provider?
- How do I feel about my fund’s fees and charges, particularly relative to the services I receive?
- How is my fund performing, and over what term?
- If I change funds, what will it cost?
- If I change funds will I get all the benefits in the new fund that I have in the current fund?
